STUDENT PROFILE
Taiwanese-American pianist Andrew Chen is currently pursuing his MM degree in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music, under the direction of Dr. Andrew Harley. He studied piano with Betty Woo and violin with Dan Flanagan at the University of California, Berkeley, performing both as a pianist and a violinist in the University Symphony Orchestra. After graduating with double degrees in Music and Statistics in 2019, Andrew won second place at the MTAC Piano Solo Competition and participated in the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York. In October 2021, he performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra led by conductor David Milnes. In the summer of 2022, he was the rehearsal and orchestral pianist for West Edge Opera’s American premiere of Coraline, written by Mark-Anthony Turnage and conducted by John Kennedy. In 2023, Andrew participated in the Collaborative Piano Institute in Louisiana State University, and served as the staff pianist for the US Open Competition in Oakland, CA and the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC.
Andrew also enjoys composing and has written several pieces for solo piano, chamber music, and film music. His compositions have won prizes in the Pacific Musical Composition Competition and the MTAC Composers Today State Contest.
