Alan E. Curle
Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, University of Rochester
BIOGRAPHY
Alan Curle was raised in Memphis TN where he attended Rhodes College (B.S. Biology ’82) and University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences (M.D. ’86). He did his anesthesiology residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center San Antonio, TX (chief resident ’89) and a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (neuro and thoracic anesthesiology ’90). After a three-year payback to the USAF at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base he was recruited to Highland Hospital in Rochester. There he became Chief of Anesthesiology as well as Co-Medical Director of Perioperative Services in 2001. In 2010 he was made Medical Director of Perioperative Services, a position which he held until June of 2024. He continues on the leadership team of the Center for Perioperative Medicine of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He was promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2017. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiology, and is a Past President of the New York Society of Anesthesiology.
Alan’s interest and aptitude for music were recognized and encouraged from an early age by his grandmother Hazel R. Curle (piano) and his parents Ray (tenor/oboe and English horn) and Marilyn H. (choral alto) Curle. His start was in choirs at his parents’ church and continued in high school and college, the latter with the Rhodes Singers under the direction of Tony Garner and with his voice professor, Diane McCollough Clark. Alan maintained his singing pursuits throughout his medical training—including with Eastman alumnus Ed Rieke ’75E (DMA) at Saint Mark’s in San Antonio, TX—and culminated his talents with the Christ Church Schola Cantorum under the direction of Stephen Kennedy. In addition to his vocal pursuits, Alan studied clarinet beginning in high school, where he played in his school band, the Memphis Symphony Youth orchestra, and eventually with the Rhodes Orchestra.
Not only did his parents set an example for practicing music but they were also major supporters and volunteers with many music organizations in Memphis. He looks forward to continuing that tradition with this leadership role for the Eastman School of Music.
