ROCHESTER, NY — For the second consecutive year, the world’s best-known brass quintet — the Canadian Brass — pays a visit to Rochester this summer for a special weekend residency at the Eastman School of Music. The highlight of the visit is a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12, in Eastman Theatre (60 Gibbs St.) featuring an engaging program that includes Hindemith, popular film music, and seemingly everything in between.
Entertaining audiences for more than three decades with a unique blend of virtuosity, humor, and genre-blending repertoire, the Canadian Brass are hailed as “the men who put brass music on the map” (The Washington Post). The five virtuosi — including Eastman alumnus and tubist Charles Daellenbach — have made the brass quintet venue an outstanding method for presenting concert music with their innovative and exciting programs for audiences of any age. They not only present works in the classical repertoire, but continue to expand their repertoire and take leaps into jazz, contemporary concert music, and popular songs — always blended with lively dialogue, humor, and theatrical effects.
In addition to tours around the world and performances with major symphony orchestras, the Canadian Brass has been seen by millions of television viewers on such programs as The Tonight Show, NBC News’ Today, and Entertainment Tonight. The group also has appeared with John Williams and the Boston Pops on Evening at the Pops, as well as numerous PBS specials. Moreover, the quintet has created eight videos that have gained an international audience. With more than 50 recordings, the Canadian Brass has carved a new musical tradition in brass performance.
Tickets for the Eastman Theatre concert range from $10-$17.50 (with a $5 discount for UR students with ID, $3 discount for UR faculty and staff with ID), and are available in person at Ticket Express (100 East Ave.), by phone at 232-1900, or on the web at Ticketmaster.com. Any remaining tickets will be available at the theatre box office one hour before the start of the concert.
As part of its residency during Eastman’s Summer Session, the Canadian Brass will work with and coach professional, collegiate, and high school-age students in brass ensemble repertory. The weekend workshop will conclude with a free performance by these students at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 13, in Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St.). The public is invited to this concert.
