STUDENT PROFILE
Sven Joseph is a second-year PhD student in the Musicology department at the Eastman School of Music. He earned a B.A. in Music from California State University, Sacramento, where he studied both percussion and piano while covertly developing a musicological identity. In recent years, he has delivered a grant-supported presentation on extended techniques and Augenmusik in the music of George Crumb, the paper for which was featured in the 2023 volume of UCLA’s student musicology journal MUSE. He is also an active program notes author, including the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, and Sinfonia Spirituosa, a baroque period ensemble for which Sven secured two years of grant-supported programming. Sven’s research interests center primarily on Polish folk music and its various interactions and intersections with politics and cultural identity at the metro-local, national, and international levels throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
