Lauren Berlin
STUDENT PROFILE
Lauren Berlin (she/her) is a Ph.D. candidate in Musicology whose primary research explores the intersections of television music, broadcasting culture, and transnational circulation. Her dissertation examines TV musical variety shows from 1948–1965 as a site for the performance and formation of postwar American identity. She has presented work at annual meetings of the Society of American Music, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, and Music and the Moving Image. Additionally, her research is supported by the Ellen Koskoff Alumni Fund, the Susan B. Anthony Institute, and the Glenn Watkins Traveling Fellowship. Lauren’s writing appears in PopMatters, and the Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television (forthcoming, 2024). Lauren earned a B.A. in philosophy from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, and an M.A. in musicology and advanced certificate in ethnomusicology from Eastman.
In addition to her scholarship, Lauren works with the Radio Preservation Task Force at the Library of Congress, and she serves as chair for the Graduate Student Forum for the Society for American Music. Outside of her work, Lauren is a professional choral singer and enjoys playing in Eastman’s gamelan ensembles.
