Nearly 200 members of the Eastman School of Music community, including new undergraduate students, faculty, and staff, are participating in the School’s first George Eastman Day, volunteering their time at various organizations throughout the Rochester area on Friday, August 26.
Born out of the School’s and its founder’s commitment to community enrichment, George Eastman Day will be a day of community service to encourage volunteerism and future student involvement in community outreach and engagement projects.

10 a.m. — George Eastman Day Kick-Off event
Location: Eastman Student Living Center Courtyard, 100 Gibbs St.
Paul Burgett, University of Rochester Vice President, will speak about the contributions musicians can make to their communities beyond the stage. Dr. Burgett received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman School. Also speaking will be Eastman junior Garrett Rubin, the coordinator of George Eastman Day.
11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Students Work at Sites Throughout the City.
Below are several activities and sites at which Eastman musicians will be volunteering:
Blooming Optimists at St. Monica’s Church
Location: Riverway Bicycle Trail alongside the Genesee River between Brooks Avenue and Ford St.
Thirty students, the largest of the Eastman volunteer groups, will be doing beautification work along the river. They will be working from south to north.

Monroe Family YMCA

Twenty-five Eastman students will be painting various spaces in the Monroe YMCA.

Foodlink

Twenty-five students will be sorting and organizing food for distribution

Writers & Books

Ten students will be doing beautification projects around the Writers & Books building and the surrounding area

Location: River Campus, Student Microfarm adjacent to Whipple Park graduate student housing
Eight students will be building cold frames for the University of Rochester student garden
