This year’s recipient of an annual scholarship awarded by the Rochester Chapter, The Links, Incorporated, to an Eastman School of Music student will present a recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in the School’s Kilbourn Hall.
Nicholas Wiggins, a baritone in the studio of Professor Jan Opalach, received the award, which is a cooperative effort between The Links, Incorporated, and the Eastman School to recognize and celebrate extraordinary talent and academic achievement of an African American scholar musician.
The Links, Incorporated, is an international organization linking African American women committed to educational, cultural, and civic activities on issues of human rights and justice. The Rochester chapter was established in 1984 and supports programs in the arts, youth services, and national and international trends and services.
Wiggins is a dual degree student, majoring in economics in the College of the University of Rochester and in vocal performance at the University’s Eastman School of Music.
At Eastman, Wiggins has been a soloist with the Eastman Chorale and performed the role of Leporello in a scene from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni in Eastman Opera Theatre’s recent “Opera Gala.” In spring 2009, he was Antonio in Eastman Opera Theatre’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro. He also has been a soloist with the Eastman Chorale and on Sundays is a section leader for a choir at a local Baptist Temple.
In addition, Wiggins is a member of the University’s oldest all-male a cappella group, the Yellowjackets, gives tours to prospective students and their families through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the College, and played on the University’s football team for two years.
Wiggins will present a recital featuring a range of music, from a Baroque work by composer Alessandro Scarlatti to a traditional spiritual and Leon Russell’s “A Song for You.”
The program is free and open to the public. However, tickets are required. They can be obtained from Links members or by contacting the Eastman School of Music Concert Office (585-274-1110), or by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to The Links, Inc. P.O. Box 22873, Rochester, N.Y. 14692.
