Julianna Willson is a third year Ph.D. student in music theory. Her research has centered on issues surrounding intertextuality and narrative within the works of 20th and 21st century female composers. In particular, Julianna’s current work focuses on questions of identity, gesture, and connections to literary nonsense within the music of Unsuk Chin. She has presented her research at regional and national conferences, including her work on Johanna Beyer’s style of dissonant counterpoint at the Society of Music Theory (2022).

Julianna holds a M.A. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music and B.M. in piano performance from the University of Memphis, where she was a finalist in the University of Memphis Soloists Competition in 2016 and received the Dean’s Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. In her spare time, Julianna enjoys activities like rock climbing and playing board games with friends.
