STUDENT PROFILE
Andrew Blake is a third-year Ph.D. student in music theory. Prior to his enrollment at Eastman, he earned a B.M. in Music Performance (Trombone) and a B.S. in Computer Science from Wright State University (2018), and a M.A. in Music Theory from Kent State University (2020). His research interests include music cognition/perception, jazz improvisation, and microtonal systems of organizing pitch. He has presented his research at local, regional, and international conferences, on topics including historical temperament, jazz harmonic syntax, expressive timing in punk music, and most recently the perceived emotions listeners associate with chords. He currently serves as a web manager and a guest vignette editor for Intégral’s 36th volume, and will be continuing in his editorial and web-managing capacities in the upcoming 37th.
He has taught both first- and second-year coursework in the ESM undergraduate core, including both years of the aural skills sequence and one year of second-year theory. Additionally, he has taught as a remote adjunct at Kent State University for an online course in the school’s online Masters of Music Education program.
In addition to his studies and work at Eastman, he is currently the catcher for Absolute Pitch, the official softball team of the ESM theory department, and occasionally enjoys rock climbing with several fellow theorists on his days off.
