Building on a cultural exchange and collaboration launched in 2009, faculty members from the China Conservatory in Beijing will be visiting the Eastman School of Music and performing a free public concert.
Scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at the University of Rochester’s Interfaith Chapel, the concert features traditional Chinese music performed on traditional Chinese instruments: the stringed erhu, pipa, guzheng, and yaqin (yazheng), along with the Chinese flute as well as the piano. The Chinese musicians also will premiere a new work by Eastman School Dean Douglas Lowry, “Into Still Waters a Tear Drops.”
In addition to performing, the Chinese visitors will be meeting with their counterparts on the Eastman faculty.
The “Eastman-China Connection” initiative was created in 2009 by then Eastman doctoral piano student Liu Liu to provide opportunities for musicians to engage in a cross-cultural dialogue and foster strong ties and relationships across borders. That year, four Eastman graduate students, three faculty members, and Lowry conducted a 12-day tour of four Chinese conservatories, including the China Conservatory. Liu Liu will be performing with the Chinese faculty members during the April 26 concert.
The Eastman School of Music has established working relationships and exchange programs with other music institutions, such as the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, to develop its international exchanges.
