Over the next few weeks, Eastman School of Music students will be reaching out into the community with classical music, presenting interactive concerts in schools, libraries, churches, nursing homes, hospitals, and other locations. The events are part of the School’s “Music for All” initiative, a chamber music program designed to take classical music out of concert halls and bring it directly to the public.
The Eastman students developed two performance programs, one for a school-aged audience and one for a general audience, which they’ll present between March 25 and April 18. Some of the performances are open to the public (see below).
In preparation for the more than 70 programs that will be presented, the students attended a January workshop with the Ying Quartet, the Eastman School of Music’s string quartet-in-residence, and observed the professional musicians perform an educational program for a group of children. They then worked with Eastman faculty members to put together their own programs.
“Music for All” is a curricular requirement for Eastman brass, harp, piano, string, and wind chamber music groups, designed to teach students the skills necessary to bring music to audiences in the community.
