A film and music festival program in Berlin put the spotlight on composers and musicians from the Eastman School of Music.
“Old Films and New Music,” presented by the Kurt Weill Festival, featured little-known short films from the 1920s and 1930s by Bauhaus master and avant-garde artist László Moholy-Nagy. The music accompanying the works was written by Michaela Eremiášová and Jairo Duarte-López, and was presented by Anyango Yarbo-Davenport, violin; Rick McRae, trombone; Eastman alumnus Bobby Mitchell, piano; and two musicians from Berlin.
The one-and-a-half-hour show on January 31 drew a full-house to the Arsenal Cinema venue and received coverage in Berlin and Leipzig media. The show was curated by and introduced by Reinhild Steingröver, associate professor of German at the Eastman School, and included films from the archive at the George Eastman House. The collaborative project was jointly funded by the Weill Fest and the Eastman School with support from the George Eastman House and Arsenal Filmmuseum Berlin.
Local audiences will have the opportunity to hear the music program at noon on Friday, March 25, in the Curtis Theatre at the George Eastman House, when Eastman musicians repeat their performance as part of the School’s annual Women in Music Festival.
