The American Brass Quintet, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary during its current touring season, will be appearing at the Eastman School of Music at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, as part of the Kilbourn Concert Series.
Called the “high priests of brass” by Newsweek, the American Brass Quintet has performed on five continents, recorded more than 50 albums, premiered more than 100 brass works, and made significant contributions to the modern brass quintet repertoire by commissioning new works. The ensemble’s varied Kilbourn Hall program will span four centuries of music, from 17th-century Italian songs to a new work by award-winning composer and Eastman School alumnus Shafer Mahoney.
Equally committed to the promotion of brass chamber music through education, the American Brass Quintet has been in residence at The Juilliard School since 1987 and at the Aspen Music Festival since 1970. Through mini-residencies, the members of the Quintet have reached out to young groups and individuals while on tour and shared their expertise in chamber music performance and training. While at Eastman, the Quintet will lead a workshop for the School’s “Music for All” outreach performance program on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall and will teach a chamber music master class on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 9:30 a.m. in Kilbourn Hall.
The American Brass Quintet’s acclaimed performances, signature programming of contemporary brass music alongside works from earlier eras, extensive discography, and educational mission have brought the ensemble international recognition as one of the premier chamber music ensembles and the leader in the field of serious brass chamber music. The current quintet consists of Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb, trumpet; David Wakefield, horn; Michael Powell trombone; and John D. Rojak, bass trombone.
