Stephen Hough, who has emerged as a unique presence on the international concert scene since winning the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1983, will appear at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, as part of the Kilbourn Concert Series at the Eastman School of Music. He will perform the music of Fauré, Franck, Copland, and Chopin.
From highly acclaimed performances of standard repertoire to his interest in discovering unusual and neglected works, Hough has been praised for his brilliant technique and imagination as well as his scholarship and intellectual rigor.
The recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, sometimes called the “genius grant,” Hough has appeared with most of the major American and European orchestras and plays recitals regularly in the major halls and concert series around the world. He is also a guest at festivals such as Salzburg, Mostly Mozart, Aspen, Ravinia, Tanglewood, Blossom, Hollywood Bowl, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh and the BBC Proms, where he has made more than a dozen concerto appearances.
His more than 40 CDs on the Hyperion label have garnered numerous international honors, including Gramophone magazine’s 1996 and 2003 Record of the Year, the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Diapason d’Or, Le Monde de la Musique, and several Grammy nominations.
In addition to performing, Hough composes, writes liner notes and music articles, and teaches as a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at Royal Northern College, Manchester.
