Award-winning organist Timothy Tikker will perform at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the Memorial Art Gallery as part of the Italian Baroque Organ Showcase Concert Series.
The recital will feature the American premiere of “Menorah,” a work by English composer Peter Bannister. Tikker also will perform 16th and 17th century works by Johann Jakob Froberger, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Thomas Preston, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, and others.
Tikker has appeared as a soloist with the Kalamazoo and Charleston Symphony Orchestras. He provided improvised accompaniment to the silent film The King of Kings in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. He has also published numerous articles in music journals, especially concerning French music and organs. His compositions include Variations sur un vieux Noel and Three Gregorian Sketches for organ, and Magnificat for choir, harp, and organ.
Tikker won first prize in the National Improvisation Competition in the 1987 San Anselmo Organ Festival; first prize in the UNESP Organ Composition Competition in Brazil in 1997; and the Holtkamp-AGO Award in Organ Composition in 1993. He also earned a Finalist Award in the 2000 Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Competition.
Tickets to the Italian Baroque Organ Showcase Concert are $12 for the general public and $8 for students. They are available at the door one hour before the concert and are payable by cash or check.
The Italian Baroque Organ was built around 1770 in central Italy. Restored and installed in 2005 at the Memorial Art Gallery, the instrument is the only one of its kind in North America. More information on concerts is available online at www.esm.rochester.edu/concerts.
