Ensemble East will bring the rich and unique sounds of Japanese music to Kilbourn Hall when the group performs at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, as part of the Eastman School of Music’s World Music Series.
Performing traditional and modern music, Ensemble East combines the haunting sound of the shakuhachi (vertical bamboo flute) with the plucked strings of the shamisen (three-stringed lute) and koto (Japanese zither) to present and perform Geisha tales, poetry of nature, and stories of old Japan.
Tickets to Ensemble East are $18, $12, and $8 (discount with UR ID) and can be purchased at the Rochester Philharmonic Box Office, 108 East Ave.; by phone (585)454-2100; or online at esm.rochester.edu/concerts.
The World Music Series at the Eastman School continues later in the spring with the Afro-Brazilian troupe Ologundê on Thursday, March 25, and Gamelan Lila Muni, the Eastman School’s Balinese percussion ensemble, on Tuesday, April 29.
