The New Horizons Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra will present their first concert of the season under the direction of Nancy Strelau at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the Linehan Chapel at Nazareth College. The 55-member group will present a 45-minute concert including classical favorites, jazz, pop and holiday music. The concert is free and open to the public.
The New Horizons orchestras are part of the New Horizons program, an adult music education program sponsored by the Eastman Community Music School, a division of the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. Founded at Eastman in 1991 by Roy Ernst, now professor emeritus at the Eastman School, the program has been widely adopted by more than 100 organizations throughout the United States and Canada.
The Rochester program offers several ensembles that rehearse weekday mornings. The groups include three bands, two orchestras, a mixed chorus, the Dance Band, and chamber music ensembles. Beginners are welcome throughout the school year.
