Kitty Xiao’s “Ink and Wash” was inspired by calligraphy of contemporary Chinese, New York-based artist Gu Wenda. An Australian composer now studying at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Xiao particularly enjoys writing for percussion, which is evident in this piece, or “noise projects” as she calls them. “Ink and Wash” began with the orchestra creating grumbling sounds, as much of the instrumentation was authentic and raw. Xiao’s influences of Ravel, Bartok, Michael Jackson and Talking Heads was evident, and her experimentation with textural ideas was intriguing.
