ROCHESTER, NY – It may be summer recess for many, but the music doesn’t take a break at the Eastman School of Music. The School’s Community Education Division (CED) presents its annual summer concert series, as well as several other concerts connected to its Summer Session programs and workshops. The concerts – which range from classical to jazz to world music – feature the talents of Eastman CED and collegiate faculty as well as other notable guest artists.
Again this year, all concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St.), unless otherwise indicated. A brief description of the concert in the series follows; all but one (July 11) are free of charge. The dates and times of student summer program concerts are listed on page 3 of this press release. Monday, June 25 The Dave Rivello Ensemble
Back again this year as part of Eastman’s High School Jazz Studies summer program, this local, 12-piece group – made up of several Eastman graduates – with a big band sound kicks off the summer season at Eastman. They’ll perform music written, arranged, and/or conducted by its namesake, Dave Rivello, who joins Eastman’s jazz faculty this fall as director of the New Jazz Ensemble.
Monday, June 25 Ray Pool, harp Howard Hanson Hall, 7:30 p.m.
Lovers of harp music won’t want to miss internationally known harpist Ray Pool – who will be at Eastman as part of a weeklong workshop for harpists – in this special recital, which is open to the public. Please note the location of this performance.
Wednesday, June 27 The Ying Quartet with Elinor Freer, piano
As a highlight of its weeklong "Chamber Music Discovery" program for middle- and high-school students, Eastman’s quartet-in-residence presents an outstanding all-Dvorák concert, featuring String Quartet in A-flat major, Op. 105 and Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 87, with Elinor Freer on piano.
Monday, July 2 Bob Sneider, jazz guitar
Eastman jazz guitarist Bob Sneider returns to Kilbourn Hall again this summer for a concert featuring music from his latest CD, Out of the Darkness, and other jazz and popular standards. He’ll be joined by local musicians Tony Padilla (Latin percussion), Bob Stata (bass), Mike Melito (drums), Josh Rutner (saxophone) and Paul Hofmann (piano).
Wednesday, July 4 SPECIAL JULY 4TH CONCERT: Sophia Gibbs-Kim, flute, and friends
Catch some great music before the downtown fireworks! Eastman CED flutist Sophia Gibbs Kim and friends present "Fourth of July Fluteworks!" – a special one-hour concert (performed without intermission) to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Her all-American program features Serenade by Eastman’s legendary director Howard Hanson; Robert Beaser’s Mountain Songs for flute and guitar (with CED guitarist Petar Kodzas); Lowell Liebermann’s fierce and fiery Sonata for Flute and Piano (with CED faculty accompanist Irina Lupynis); Katherine Hoover’s Kokopeli; and Three American Pieces by Lukas Foss. And no July 4th celebration would be complete without a patriotic encore – featuring the music of John Phillip Sousa.
Thursday, July 5 Wesley Nance, trumpet; with Megumi Kanda, trombone
CED and RPO trumpeter Wesley Nance presents an evening of terrific brass music, featuring several of his Eastman and RPO colleagues – including Megumi Kanda on trombone. They’ll premiere a new work by Nance titled Grace, as well as music by Bach (arranged by Nance), Boehm, and Eric Ewazen.
Monday, July 9 Mitzie Collins and friends: World Music
Again this summer, CED’s Mitzie Collins presents her annual world music extravaganza in Kilbourn Hall. This year it features the popular Rochester trio Stone Soup, which draws from Bulgarian, Appalachian, Irish, and other styles to create their own brand of music; Russian musician Alexsey Livshits and soprano Colleen Liggett performing Russian classical and folk music; Scottish pipe music performed by the Feadan Or Pipe Band; the African American sounds of the Greater Rochester Kingdom-Bound Kids Young Adult Choir; and Native American song and dance performed by the Ganandagan Young Spirit Dancers. Of course, Collins – an international leader in the revival of the hammered dulcimer – will perform as well, along with her frequent collaborator Jim Kimball on fiddle.
Wednesday, July 11 Gene Bertoncini, jazz guitar
Legendary jazz guitarist Gene Bertoncini’s returns to Kilbourn Hall for his annual summer concert. Please note: There is a charge for this concert. General admission tickets ($8 for adults, $5 for University of Rochester faculty and staff with ID, and free for full-time students with ID and children) may be purchased at Ticket Express, 100 East Ave., or by calling 222-5000. CED faculty violinist Jeremy Zhu teams up with CED Interim Director Howard Spindler for a Sunday afternoon concert featuring the music of Mozart, Fauré, Kreisler, and Prokofiev. Please note the concert start time.
Monday, July 16 Petar Kodzas, guitar
CED faculty guitarist Petar Kodzas – with the help of soprano Pamela Kurau, other CED colleagues, and WXXI’s Mordecai Lipshutz (who will recite text) – presents an all-Schubert concert in the spirit of a 19th-century soirée, not unlike the setting the composer himself would have enjoyed in his time.
Wednesday, July 18 Carolyn Triozzi, flute
Accompanied by pianist Kevin Lieb, CED and Rochester-area flutist and educator Carolyn Triozzi will perform music for flute and piano by Jolivet, Franck, and Thea Musgrave.
Thursday, July 19 Tara Noval, violin
Violinist Tara Noval – a Rochester native who recently performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra on its tour of the Far East and who also is performing with the orchestra this summer – presents a concert called the "Virtuoso Violin." Accompanied by her mother, Pittsford resident Barbara Noval, she’ll perform the music of Bach (Partita No.2), Bartók (Rhapsody No.1), Chausson (Poème, Op. 25), and others.
July 26-August 3 Eastman Summer Piano Festival
Be prepared to be dazzled by the extraordinary artistry and technique of several Eastman doctoral students and one faculty member, all of whom are giving solo concerts as part of this year’s Summer Piano Festival for adults and students.

Eastman’s fifth annual Young Artist International Piano Competition – which runs from July 20-28 – will bring more than 25 of the world’s most talented young pianists (ages 14-18) to Rochester. (Competition dates and times can be found at www.rochester.edu/Eastman.) The winners of the competition are the featured performers in this gala concert in Eastman Theatre. The summer season at Eastman also features five "Summer Sings" – a series of choral music reading sessions held on Tuesday evenings (July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31) in Kilbourn Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. Each program is built around one or two great choral works led by a prominent local conductor. Summer Sings are free and open to the public, although a $5 donation is suggested. (Please see separate press release for more information on the Summer Sings.)
