ROCHESTER, NY – A love of music will bring together approximately 50 high school students from a youth band in Rehovot, Israel – one of Rochester’s 10 sister cities – and 48 high schoolers in the Eastman School of Music’s acclaimed Music Horizons summer program. The two groups will spend a day together immersed in music during the Israeli students’ visit to Rochester, July 11-15, part of a cultural exchange between the Flower City and its sister city in the Middle East.
The Municipal Youth Band of Rehovot, Israel, will spend Thursday, July 12, at the Eastman School, arriving at 8:30 a.m. and remaining through the late afternoon. Band members will participate in a variety of courses – including music theory, music history, sight-singing, and ear training – with the Music Horizons students, attend a peer-to-peer discussion session, enjoy lunch with their counterparts, and tour the School.
"We’re delighted to welcome the students from Israel to the Eastman School," said Ruth Cahn, who, as director of the School’s Summer Session and Music Horizons program, coordinated the visit to Eastman. "We want them to sample what life at Eastman is like for young music students. It will be a great opportunity for all involved to ‘share musical notes’ and learn from one another."
Now in its 17th year, Eastman’s Music Horizons is an intensive program for advanced instrumental, voice, and piano students in high school who are seriously considering a career in music. In a highly individualized environment, students take music courses and private lessons with members of the School’s Community Education Division faculty and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, attend career seminars, and play in small ensembles. This year, talented teenagers from across the United States – as well as from Singapore, Poland, and Canada – are participating in the three-week program, which concludes with the students presenting solo recitals in Kilbourn Hall at 7 p.m., Friday, July 13.
