George Walker, first African American composer to win Pulitzer Prize, dies at 96

A precocious student, he graduated from Dunbar High School at 14 and then from Oberlin College in Ohio at 18. He graduated from Curtis in 1945, and in 1956 became the first African American to receive a doctorate from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. Beloved University of Rochester vice president and local leader Paul Burgett dies at 72

Mr. Burgett came to Rochester from St. Louis and earned three degrees from the Eastman School of Music. He served as a scholar, musician, teacher, administrator and a friend at his alma mater, according to a University of Rochester statement.
He started as the student body president at Eastman. Mr. Burgett later joined the faculty and became the dean of students at Eastman and then at the entire University of Rochester. With three degrees in cello performance from the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, N.Y., Jon invested the latter half of his professional life at his alma mater, as associate director and associate dean of Graduate Studies there. He retired from music administration and education in 1995, and deeply enjoyed a return to playing the cello with friends throughout the last 20 years of his life.
