ROCHESTER, NY — The Eastman School of Music invites singers of all ages and ability levels to take part in Eastman Summer Sings. The series of choral music reading sessions is held on four consecutive Tuesday evenings: July 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the beautiful, air-conditioned Kilbourn Hall.
Each evening features one or two great choral works: Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Haydn’s Te Deum (July 5); Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus (July 12); Bach’s St. John Passion (July 19); and A German Requiem by Brahms (July 26). Scores and refreshments are provided for this relaxed, summer music-making tradition.
Eastman School’s Director of Choral Activities, William Weinert, founded the community program eleven years ago. He’ll conduct three of the sessions, while guest conductor, Gregory Ristow, will tackle the Handel. Each evening will also feature well-known community singers as soloists.
“Hundreds of people come each summer to enjoy singing familiar masterpieces, as well as to learn works they may never have had a chance to perform,” says Dr. Weinert. “This is a wonderful way for us to celebrate the extremely strong musical tradition that makes the Rochester community truly unique.”
