The Eastman School of Music Organ Department is kicking off a new season of Community Concerts, short organ recitals by Eastman students as part of the department’s ongoing initiative to bring outstanding organ music to the Rochester area. From November to May, students will present monthly concerts in local churches, building a musical connection between organists and the community beyond weekly Sunday services.
The first Community Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Penfield and features the brand-new Ortloff Op. 1 pipe organ, installed this past summer and inaugurated in September. Boston-based Ortloff Organ Company was founded by University of Rochester and its Eastman School of Music graduate Jonathan Ortloff, who received degrees in both music and in engineering. Performers for the concert include Eastman students Zach Zwahlen, a finalist in the 2016 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Playing (NYACOP), Jacob Kasak and Madeleine Woodworth.
The variety of concert locations gives residents many convenient opportunities to attend. Since every pipe organ is different from others, both performers and concert-goers enjoy the diverse soundscapes and colors of the variety of instruments showcased throughout the series.
Organ Community Concerts are open to the public, and a free-will offering will benefit the Eastman Organ Department student travel fund.
Upcoming concerts will be posted on the Eastman School of Music Organ Events webpage. For more information and for up-to-date performance locations and times, please visit https://www.esm.rochester.edu/organ/events/ .
