Roger Freitas, associate professor and chair of musicology at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, has been elected a director-at-large of the American Musicological Society for a two-year term beginning this fall.
The society advances scholarship in the various fields of music through research, learning, and teaching. It is governed by a membership-elected board of directors that consists of six directors-at-large and five officers.
Freitas is the author of the book Portrait of a Castrato: Politics, Patronage, and Music in the Life of Atto Melani and an edition of the Complete Cantatas of Melani. His articles have been published in the Journal of Musicology, Music and Letters, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Opera News, and the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music. He has presented papers at the annual meetings of the American Musicological Society, Royal Musical Association, Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, and Modern Language Association.
In 2009, Freitas planned and hosted the annual meeting of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music at Eastman. He has organized panels and symposiums, served on committees of the American Musicological Society, and has been a member of the board of directors of the American Handel Society since 2002. A former editor of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music newsletter, he sits on the editorial board of Eastman Studies in Music, University of Rochester Press.
Among his honors are the Philip Brett Award of the American Musicological Society and a book subvention from the society’s Donna Cardamone Jackson Publication Endowment Fund, both for Portrait of a Castrato. He has also won the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. In 2006, he received Eastman’s Eisenhart Award for Excellence of Teaching.
Freitas joined the Eastman faculty in 1998 and is a faculty associate at the University of Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies.
