Come out this Wednesday, January 28, at 8 p.m. for the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s first concert of the new semester. The program features Michael Daugherty’s Raise the Roof, a powerful timpani concerto that crosses many styles and idioms. It is replete with standing trombone players, lead trumpet solos, and unrelenting timpani, played by Eastman student Christopher Jones. The concert also includes one of the great standards of the wind ensemble repertoire, Ingolf Dahl’s Sinfonietta.
While all the pieces on this concert are excellent, it is the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s sincerest honor to play a piece by an alumnus, Chris Theofanidis (MM ’92) — I Wander the World in a Dream of My Own Making. Chris Theofanidis has been the recipient of the International Masterprize, the Rome Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, six ASCAP Gould Prizes, a Fulbright Fellowship to France, a Tanglewood Fellowship, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Charles Ives Fellowship. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary composition.
