Jamal Rossi named new Eastman School dean

When University of Rochester President Joel Seligman introduced Jamal J. Rossi as the new dean of the Eastman School of Music, he called the school the “crown jewel” of UR. Rossi, Seligman noted, was the right person to maintain the Eastman School’s international reputation as the world of music is undergoing many changes. Break of Reality fuses cello’s classical orchestra traditions with heavy metal and rock

Ten years ago Ivan Trevino and Patrick Laird came up with an intriguing idea: Create a band that mixes classical music with rock. Break of Reality was formed while they were students at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Wanting to take a break from the rigorous reality (thus the band’s name) of a classical conservatory, they were drawn to a side project that would fuse their course of study with other musical interests. Brothers Make Eastman School History

It was a historic day for the Eastman School of Music, as two siblings earned their Ph.D. in Musical Arts together. The Irrera brothers are a musical pair. Joseph plays piano and John plays violin. On Saturday morning, they became the first siblings in Eastman School history to walk the stage together to get their doctoral diplomas in musical arts. Ninety years ago, Gershwin sparked rhapsody in Rochester

Rochester went to New York City last week when the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra played at Carnegie Hall. Ninety years ago tomorrow “May 15, 1924” New York City came to Rochester. Berkman reports that while Gershwin was in Rochester, he visited the just-opened Eastman School of Music. “And he wrote a nice note in the guest book that he concluded by scribbling the first few bars of Rhapsody in Blue,” Berkman reported.
Millburn High School band concert on May 21

This year’s Artist-in-Residence, Andrew Boysen, Jr., director of bands at the University of New Hampshire, will spend a two-day residency at the high school and conduct his works with each ensemble at the concert. Boysen received the Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music and is highly sought after internationally as a guest conductor, composer, and clinician.
