Twelve students have been chosen to represent the Eastman School of Music in a concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 23.
Their performance is part of the Conservatory Project, a series that showcases outstanding young musicians from around the country. The event presents talented artists in classical music, jazz, musical theater, and opera from the nation’s leading conservatories and music schools.
The Eastman School was one of eight founding participants of the Kennedy Center Conservatory Project when it was launched in 2004, and student musicians have represented the school in front of Washington, D.C., audiences every year since then.
Eastman’s wide-ranging program features instrumentalists and vocalists. Performers include a trio composed of freshman Tyrone Allen, double bass, and seniors Adler Scheidt, guitar, and Alexa Tarantino, alto saxophone, playing “A Weaver of Dreams” by Victor Young and Jack Elliott. Another trio, composed of doctoral student Yuseon Nam, violin, and master’s degree students Soohyun Juhn, cello, and Yewon Jeong, piano, will perform the Allegro moderato-Presto from Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat “Archduke.”
In addition, senior John Leighton, tenor, and master’s degree students Joel Balzun, baritone, and Christopher Longo, tenor, will present a selection from Puccini’s Turandot, Act II, Scene 1.
Soloists for the concert are junior Thomas Steigerwald, piano, performing Balakirev’s Islamey, Fantasie Orientale; master’s degree student Markiyan Melnychenko, violin, presenting Ravel’s Tzigane; and senior Jennifer Zhou, flute, performing Zyman’s Sonata.
