DOES music make you smarter?
Year after year, researchers report associations between children’s participation in music classes and better grades, higher SAT scores and elevated cognitive skills. It’s also well known that many successful adults played instruments as children. On the basis of such evidence, you might assume that music education helped cause such positive outcomes.
Samuel Mehr, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, is a doctoral candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

One New York professor’s idea has expanded to an international fervor.
Dr. Roy Ernst, University of Rochester professor emeritus, conceived the New Horizons Music Project in the late-1980s.
“I just started thinking about a music program for retired adults,” Ernst wrote on the band’s website. “I (then) thought ‘Well, we would want to give concerts, but probably no one would come.’” He later stated, “I was so wrong.”

Emily Helenbrook, the very talented young soprano who is currently a sophomore at the Eastman School of Music, is giving a Christmas recital at Blessed Sacrament Church.
The recital, which supports Veterans Voices, takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday. Emily, pictured above, will be joined by pianist Orlando Buenos Diaz in a range of Christmas selections.

Amanda Evans will play the grand harp in a concert at Danbury Library, 170 Main St. in Danbury, Saturday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 3 p.m.
Evans has a master’s degree in harp performance from Eastman School of Music, and is a member of Trio Cantabile, which performs throughout New England.

There is Christmas music, and then there is the Caribbean Christmas Mass, sung by the Irondequoit Chorale with the Panloco Steel Drum Band. Performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and more, the “Caribbean Mass” was composed by Eastman School of Music instructor Glenn McClure.
