In recent years, there has been a rise in commercial gift package options geared toward college students. They range from a bedroom in a bag, including a comforter, laundry hamper, sheets and towels, to a mobile medicine chest full of cough syrup, allergy pills and contraceptives.
Rebekah Lorenz, from Middletown, a first-year student at Eastman School of Music, was pleasantly surprised to find a made-to-order package from a friend back home filled with granola bars, peanut butter crackers and candy during her first week of school. She split the loot with a few people in her dorm, using it as an opportunity to meet more people.
“It just made me feel a lot more confident,” she says.

An integral component of successful convention marketing is the endorsement of local and regional residents who are members of or affiliated with targeted organizations. We are grateful to the many local ambassadors who have already worked with VisitRochester to bring their groups to the area.
For example, Eastman School of Music faculty members were instrumental in bringing the International Society of Bassists to Rochester this year. And the facilities management teams from the University of Rochester and SUNY College at Geneseo worked closely with our sales team to bring in the Eastern region of APPA (formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators), a group that assists facilities officers and physical plant administrators at colleges, universities and other educational institutions.

(Rochester City Newspaper © 10/16/2013)
On October 2, Douglas Lowry, Dean Emeritus of the Eastman School of Music, passed away. In memory of Lowry, a concert is being dedicated on Friday, October 18 at the Eastman Theater, presented by the Eastman Philharmonia and the Eastman Rochester Chorus, under conductor Neil Varon. Almost 300 instrumentalists and choral members will perform Mahler’s “The Resurrection.” Its first movement, “Todtenfeier” (“Funeral Rites”) is a symphonic poem, and, according to Mahler’s personal notes, the complete symphony poses a series of questions on the meaning of life and death, which he sought to answer.
Mollie Katzen creates vegetarian meals for busy cooks[mediatracking.com]

When I first saw the title of Mollie Katzen’s new cookbook, I assumed this was a collection of vegetable-centric recipes. The Heart of the Plate: Vegetarian Recipes for a New Generation bears a single upturned kale leaf against a clean eggplant purple background on its cover.
“Everyone is born to eat and enjoy food,” says the woman who ignores Food Network and rarely ever looks at other cookbooks, though she does enjoy looking at food blogger photography. “I do not live in that world of chefs and cookbooks that much. I live in my own little world, and love it.”
Orbiting that world are Katzen’s gardens, hiking trails, the piano she plays daily (she studied piano and oboe at the Eastman School of Music before continuing her studies at Cornell University and the San Francisco Art Institute), and of course, her artwork.

The Penfield Symphony Orchestra puts on four concerts each season, from October through May, attracting mostly sold-out crowds.
Though there are a number of strong college musicians at the Eastman School of Music, Bloch says the time demands of rehearsal and performances prevent them from joining. So the average age of the orchestra members skews a bit older, he says.
