ROCHESTER, NY Christian Lane, a sophomore at the Eastman School of Music, recently won a national organ performance competition at the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival held earlier this month in Wethersfield, CT. This competition is designed to give young organists performance experience, instruction from well-known educators, and the chance to meet peer musicians.
Lane, 19, was one of six organists from around the country who advanced to the final round of competition, based on a national tape audition. Competitors were asked to perform a variety of musical styles, including Baroque, choral, 20th century, and sacred hymns. As winner, Lane received the grand prize of $2000 and an opportunity to perform on the closing day of the festival.
A native of Maryland, Lane studies organ at Eastman with David Higgs and harpsichord with Arthur Haas. He currently is the assistant organist at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St., Rochester. There he accompanies the Chancel Choir, an adult choir with which he recently recorded a CD and with whom he will tour Great Britain next summer.
