Rochester, NY – Henry Fogel, who has led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through more than a decade of successful expansion and initiatives, will be the next presenter in the Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program Guest Speaker Series at the Eastman School of Music.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, takes place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Howard Hanson Hall at the Eastman School (26 Gibbs St.). Fogel’s topic is "The Orchestra of the Future."
Formerly executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra and orchestra manager of the New York Philharmonic, Fogel has been president of the CSO since 1985, during which time the orchestra has achieved artistic preeminence under the direction of the late Sir George Solti and Daniel Barenboim. During his tenure, Fogel has overseen the $110 million expansion and renovation of Orchestra Hall and has charted an ambitious "Community Engagement Initiative" for the CSO.
Begun in 1996, the innovative Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program prepares students not only to perform and to teach, but also to assume leadership roles in arts organizations. The program includes internships, guest presentations, and special courses. The 70 alumni of the program have found performing and administrative positions with notable arts organizations including Columbia Artists Management, the Atlanta Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Juilliard School, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
