Boston-based Dinosaur Annex, which boasts more than 35 years on the new music scene, performs on the stage of Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013.
Dedicated to bringing cutting-edge works to the public through live performing, commissioning, and recording, Dinosaur Annex has given hundreds of premieres. The ensemble is known for its repertoire representing a wide stylistic range of music by modern masters as well as by emerging composers. Dedicated to education, the Dinosaur Annex presents an annual Young Composers Concert that features school-age musicians performing music by composers just completing their studies or on the cusp of their careers.
The ensemble, described as “critical to the future vitality of new music” by the Boston Music Intelligencer, will present a program featuring Jácaras by Pulitzer Prize finalist Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, chair of Eastman’s composition department, and a work for violin, piano, and percussion by Yu-Hui Chang. The concert also includes Steven Stucky’s Boston Fancies, Annie Gosfield’s The Harmony of the Body-Machine, and Daniel S. Godfrey’s Luna Rugosa.
Dinosaur Annex has been featured in numerous recordings on the Koch, New World, Navona, Bridge, Centaur, and Capstone labels. Their recording and performances of Lew Spratlan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Life is a Dream earned critical praise.
Members of Dinosaur Annex appear regularly with Boston’s finest musical organizations, including the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Boston, Ballet, and Handel & Haydn. The group gets its name from its origins as the musical “annex” of New England Dinosaur Dance Theater.
Tickets to the concert are $10, sold one hour before the concert at the door only, and are free to UR ID holders subject to availability.
