We are pleased to announce that guest speaker, Bhaskar Pant ’72, the executive director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professional Education, is coming to the University of Rochester in partnership with our colleagues at the Hajim School for Engineering and Applied Sciences and the University’s Office of Equity and Inclusion and will be at Eastman to present a lecture on cultural awareness and intercultural communication.
In this interactive seminar on Tuesday, November 12 from 3:30–5 p.m. in Howard Hanson Hall, Pant, an internationally experienced instructor in intercultural communication, will make you aware of visible and invisible cultural differences (with examples) that can dramatically impact virtual and in person communication between people of different cultures. You will learn about two primary groups of culture in the world (E. T. Hall), along with their traits and characteristics, in addition to research-derived differences in national cultural dimensions (G. Hofstede) to allow you to better understand and deal with behavioral differences you may encounter in your work and elsewhere. You will learn about your own “cultural behavior” and how it may be perceived by individuals from other cultures. You will discover that language and culture are interconnected, and even though we are bonded by a common language, certain expressions don’t travel too well across cultures. Pant will end his presentation by providing tips for minimizing intercultural misunderstandings and enhancing one’s intercultural effectiveness.
