The Eastman School of Music is thrilled to highlight a number of upcoming performances in the month of November. Among them are multiple ensembles highlighting our talented students, the first of three productions this academic year from Eastman Opera Theatre and the first performances in our Eastman Piano Series and Eastman Ranlet Series.
All of these events take place our three incredible concert halls: Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, Kilbourn Hall and Hatch Recital Hall.
Most of the concerts listed are free and open to the public, and ticketed events may be booked through EastmanTheatre.org or by calling 585-274-3000. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets as soon as possible to secure the best seats and savings.
Faculty Artist Series

Three more concerts are taking place this semester to highlight the world class artistry of Eastman faculty members. Tickets are $10 for the public and free with URID.
Eastman Opera Theatre: “Silent Light” (Ticketed)
Thursday, October 31 – Sunday, November 3 | Kilbourn Hall
Paola Prestini and Royce Vavrek’s contemporary foley opera is, as they say, “a story of people trying to do their best.” Facing themes of infidelity, crisis of conscience and self-destruction, this opera delves into the emotional landscape of a Mennonite community in northern Mexico. Based on the film Stellet Licht by Carlos Reygadas, it includes explicit content and is therefore recommended for audiences aged 18+ only. Pat Diamond directs as Timothy Long conducts. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Tickets to all EOT performances are available through Eastman’s Box Office website.
Eastman Piano Series: Yunchan Lim (Ticketed)
Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 | Kodak Hall
Since becoming the youngest person to ever win gold at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of 18 in 2022, Yunchan Lim’s ascent to international stardom has been meteoric. Marin Alsop expressed: “Yunchan is that rare artist who brings profound musicality and prodigious technique organically together.” Tickets for the Eastman Piano Series are available online through the Eastman Box Office website.
Eastman Wind Orchestra
Monday, November 4 at 7:30 | Kodak Hall
The Eastman Wind Orchestra explores classic American wind band repertoire by Jenkins and Millburn, as well as arrangements of Charles Ives in the 150th year anniversary of his birth. Percy Grainger’s monumental “Lincolnshire Posy” concludes the evening.
Eastman New Jazz Ensemble

The Eastman New Jazz Ensemble was established to showcase the finest contemporary music from around the world written for jazz ensemble. Performing repertoire primarily from the last 20 years, the New Jazz Ensemble plays music not often heard or yet recorded, and frequently premieres new works, including those of student writers, all under the direction of Dave Rivello.
Eastman Wind Ensemble featuring Dovas Lietuvninkas, trumpet

Mark Davis Scatterday leads the storied Eastman Wind Ensemble in Joseph Schwanter’s “From A Dark Millenium,” John Mackey’s symphony for band “Wine-Dark Sea,” and Joel Puckett’s “15th Night of the Moon,” alongside trumpet soloist Dovas Lietuvninkas ’16E.
Brass Weekend
Friday, November 8 – Sunday, November 10 | Various Locations
From Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10, 2024, five different performances will showcase students from the trumpet, horn, trombone and tuba/euphonium studios at the Eastman School of Music in all three of its major performance venues. This is the first time Eastman’s brass students have been specifically featured on an entire weekend of events.
Eastman Piano Series: Vadym Kholodekno (Ticketed)

Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko has captured audiences across the globe with his depth of sound, exceptional refinement of expression and consummate virtuosity. A multiple-award winning pianist (Van Cliburn Competition, Schubert Competition in Dortmund, Sendai Competition in Japan), he is in demand both for recital and concerto appearances, performing with leading international orchestras and conductors. Eastman Ranlet Series: Cuarteto Casals (Ticketed)

Since winning first prizes at the London and Brahms-Hamburg competitions, Cuarteto Casals, which was founded in 1997 at the Escuela Reina Sofia in Madrid, has been a continual guest at the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Cité de la Musique Paris, Konzerthaus and Muzikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Suntory Hall among many others. Eastman School Symphony Orchestra

Graduate conducting student Yonatan Dvir helms the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra in Farrenc’s “Overture No. 1 in E Minor” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 1 in G Minor ‘Winter Daydreams.’” Professor of Double Bass James VanDemark collaborates as soloist on Missy Mazzoli’s “Dark With Excessive Bright.”
Eastman Jazz Lab Band

The Eastman Jazz Lab Band is a full 17-piece jazz ensemble, consisting of both undergraduate and graduate students. The ensemble performs a full range of big band repertoire including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, Bill Holman, and more. The Ensemble is directed by Associate Professor Rich Thompson and assisted by a graduate JCM student.
Eastman Philharmonia

Guest conductor Tito Muñoz and doctoral conducting student Rebecca Bryant Novak conduct Eastman students in Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major, M. 83,” Debussy’s “La Mer,” and a world premiere by graduate composition student Talia Berenbaum ’24E.
Kilbourn Concert Series: Dan Tyminski Band (Ticketed)

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band. He has also contributed guitar and/or harmony to projects by Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson, to name a few. Musica Nova

Eastman Chorale

The Eastman Chorale presents an incredibly diverse concert program to close their semester of performances, with composers ranging from Brahms to Schoenberg, under the direction of William Weinert.

The Eastman School of Music was founded in 1921 by industrialist and philanthropist George Eastman (1854-1932), founder of Eastman Kodak Company.
