Middle School Band Adventure

June 29–July 9 / Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-noon
This eight-day camp is for students entering grades 7–9 who have a great desire to further their performing and musical learning. Activities will include full band rehearsals and a final concert, sectional rehearsals, master classes, and activities aimed at broadening performance techniques, ensemble skills, sight-reading and comprehensive musical skills, and musical horizons. Priscilla Todd Brown is director of the instrumental program at East High School (Rochester), and has appeared as a performer with the Rochester Philharmonic and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Tanglewood. Other faculty members will include Community Music School faculty, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra members, and special guests.

Middle School Instrumental Jazz

Morning program
July 27 — August 7/Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–noonThis half-day, two-week program is designed for middle school students entering grades 7–9 who have a serious interest in jazz improvisation and learning the fundamentals of the jazz language. The class is performance-oriented, with an emphasis on studying chords, scales, rhythms, as well as ear training and the development of coherent musical phrases and ideas. The class will also explore jazz history through discussions and listening. Jazz standards, blues, transcriptions, and Latin idioms will be the media for the class. Program includes group lessons with instrumental specialists.

Middle School Instrumental Jazz Experience

Full Day Program
July 27 — August 7/Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.– 4:30 p.m.Following the morning Middle School Instrumental Jazz program described above, students may elect to stay for an afternoon of musically enriching activities, including:
- Songwriting
- Use of computer recording and notation software
- World music, including participation in a Balinese style gamelan
- Vocal jazz and more!
Experts will instruct various workshops, broadening students' perception of what the world of music has to offer, as well as providing new opportunities for musical growth and exploration. Performance of student compositions will take place on the final day of the Instrumental Jazz program. A supervised lunch will be provided (included in the tuition) in the Eastman Student Living Center between the morning and afternoon programs.

World Music Experience

Music provides a playful way for students to interact and learn during this summer program! Students will engage in musically enriching activities focused on the study of world music cultures, including:
- Singing
- Participating in musical games and activities
- Playing instruments
- Utilizing drama through telling of folk tales
Students entering grades 3-8 will engage in activities that build vocabulary, rhythmic, singing, social, geography and gross and fine motor skills, all of which will culminate in a group performance on the final day of our Experience.
Concert: Friday, August 7 at 10 a.m. in Kilbourn Hall

Eastman Children’s Choir

Morning program
August 3-7/Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–noonA full week of singing and fun for students entering grades 3–8! All young singers are invited to join us for a week of learning group vocal technique, proper performance etiquette, great children’s choral literature, and for the opportunity to perform together in a concert for friends and family.
