Music Horizons

Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., plus evening concerts;
Saturday, 9 a.m.–noon

This internationally acclaimed program is for students currently in grades 9–12 who are seriously considering a career in music. Our highly individualized program emphasizes solo performance (all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, voice, or composition). This program is for mature students of advanced performance levels who will work well in a focused collegiate type environment. It is important that students possess both high level musical skills and good organizational skills.

The program includes:

  • Two private lessons of one hour duration per week
  • Weekly solo performance repertory class
  • A career seminar including individual career interviews and professional musician guest speakers
  • Three levels of theory and two levels of ear training
  • A choice of History of Western Music, Analysis of Western Music, or World Music
  • Small ensembles for all wind, brass, strings, and percussion
  • Basic voice or piano class for non-vocalists or non-pianists

Our faculty: Students study with members of Eastman’s Community Music School faculty and members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Final solo performances are held in acoustically magnificent Kilbourn Hall. Performances will be recorded, and each student will receive a CD(s).
Concerts:

  • Chamber – Thursday, July 30 at 2 and 7 p.m.
  • Vocal Ensemble – Friday, July 31 at 10 a.m.
  • Solo – Friday, July 31 at 2 and 7 p.m.

How to Apply:

  1. An Audition Tape or CD (10–15 min.) should include:
  • Instrumentalists: étude, sonata/concerto movement, or solo composition representing two centuries (if possible). Percussion tapes/CDs must include snare, timpani, and keyboards.
  • Composers: one or rwo works with scores and recordings if available.
  • Singers: 24 Italian Songs or equivalent, American songs by Aaron Copeland, British songs by Vaughan Williams, Henry Purcell, John Dunstable, French songs by Faure, Debussy, Hahn, and Gounod, early Schubert songs, and folk songs by American composres (this would include spirituals, Stephen Foster, and W.C. Handy)
  1. A complete application (see Applying at the top of the page) and medical form, plus the two pages for all students under 19 years of age, must be submitted, including:
  • A recommendation from your current ensemble or private teacher
  • Musical resume including recent solo and ensemble music, honors, awards
  • Application fee: $25 nonrefundable
  • Applications and tapes will be reviewed within 48 hours of receipt. Current ECMS students may apply without submitting a CD.

We recommend that any Rochester area students stay in the Student Living Center, so that they may participate fully in the experience of being a part of this outstanding peer group.

Summer Jazz Studies

June 28–July 10 / Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; evening sessions, 7–9 p.m. (plus Saturday, July 4)

This rigorous two-week program provides an intensive, performance based experience for highly motivated students currently in grades 9-12 and is ideally suited for those considering jazz studies at the collegiate level. Students work directly with the renowned Eastman School of Music jazz faculty during the two-week session in a rigorous program designed to enhance improvisational and ensemble skills.

Classes include:

  • Instrumental Master Classes
  • Jazz Combos
  • Jazz Theory
  • Large Jazz Ensembles including: Big Bands, Saxology, Guitar Ensemble
  • Jazz Forum
  • Jazz Composition
  • Evening Jam Sessions

How to Apply:

1. Audition Tape/CD requirements:

  • 5–7 minutes maximum
  • Three contrasting pieces (i.e. bebop tune, standard, ballad)
  • Recorded examples to include: improvised solos; accompanying skills—walking bass, comping, etc.
  • Drums: four recorded examples including: medium tempo swing, trading fours; ballad with brushes; up-tempo swing; Latin.

2. A complete application (see Applying at the top of the page) and medical form, plus the two pages for all students under 19 years of age, must be submitted, including:

  • A recommendation from your current ensemble or private teacher
  • Musical resume including recent solo and ensemble music, honors, awards
  • Application fee: $25 nonrefundable

Final large and small ensemble performances are held in acoustically magnificent Kilbourn Hall. Performances will be recorded, and each student will receive a CD.

  • Large Ensembles: Friday, July 10 at 3 p.m.

High School Wind Ensemble Workshop

August 3-7/Monday–Friday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Room: Messinger One

This five-day intensive Wind Ensemble Workshop is for students currently in grades 8-12. In addition, college students who reside in the Rochester area and are music majors or minors may enroll in the class without cost to assist in sectional preparation and perform with the students. Mr. Tiberio will take time to work with college Music Education majors in preparing this ensemble for a performance. The class is offered to Level 5 and 6 NYSSMA soloists on all wind instruments and percussion. A concert on Friday afternoon will represent the culmination of the week’s exploration of some contemporary and traditional works for wind ensemble or symphonic band. Instrumentation may be limited in certain sections, so early enrollment is encouraged.
