Student Conduct

Students who choose to attend the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music should understand that they have certain fundamental rights and that they have committed themselves to adhering to academic and social standards which are essential to the well-being of the community. Any student charged with misconduct will be treated in accordance with the basic standards of fundamental fairness which include timely notification of charges, fair and impartial hearings, and the right of appeal.

A significant goal of campus judiciary proceedings is to promote the welfare of the student, making the student aware of community standards, and discouraging the student from engaging in unacceptable behavior. Another significant goal is to protect the Eastman community's collective interests and deter potential offenders.

The University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for its students and to transmitting and advancing knowledge. The tradition of the University as a sanctuary of academic freedom and a center of informed discussion is an honored one. It is committed to the protection of intellectual freedoms and rights; of professors to teach; of scholars to study; of students to learn; and of all to express their views.

The Office of the Dean of Students at College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering has jurisdiction over all student conduct cases at the College. Please see their website for College-specific information.

University Intercessors

The Provost appoints members of the faculty and staff to serve as University Intercessors. The role of the Intercessors is to investigate and respond to questions and concerns about issues of harassment and discrimination expressed by any member of the University community. Intercessors work with faculty, staff, and students and their school or department to suggest outcomes and resolutions that adhere to established University policies and procedures, as well as state and federal law. Intercessors serve as a resource to the University to provide guidance and education on University policy related to harassment and discrimination.
