Partnership with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra

The Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra are continuing their partnership to offer The Gibbs Street Connection, a professional development opportunity for area music teachers. The purpose of the program is to bring music teachers into the performance environments of both the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Participation gives teachers the opportunity to be concert goers, to hear excellent models of musical performance, and to make the vital connections between listening and learning. Music standards at state and national levels describe listening as an important component of “what students should know and be able to learn.” The Gibbs Street Connection assists teachers with their own experiences in this area so they can be more effective in designing related lessons for their students.

Program Description and Schedule

The Gibbs Street Connection is organized as a series of ten concert events. Concurrent educational experiences are provided in the forms of a pre-concert lecture and “Classroom Connections” (an informational packet of teaching ideas and recommended materials for lesson planning). The schedule identifies the specific concerts selected for the 2009-2010 series. The RPO events featuring orchestral and solo concerto performances are balanced with Eastman concerts that provide variety to the overall package.

Participation Policies

To enroll in the program, select your own mix of RPO and ESM events from the series offerings; at least two must be from Eastman. For each concert you have the option of ordering one or two tickets. We encourage you to purchase and use this second ticket to support a student or colleague.

Our participation policy requires attendance at the pre-concert talk for each concert selected. Tickets are distributed only at the beginning of the pre-concert session.

Your involvement is documented through sign-in attendance records at the beginning of the pre-concert talk, and your written evaluation at the close of each event. If your district requires a separate verification for individual concert attendance, these will be signed at the end of the concert. You should check personally with your own Teacher Center or district office to determine the number of lectures and concerts you must attend in order to earn professional development credits within your district.

At the end of the Gibbs Street Connection season, we will provide a letter verifying your total number of participation hours. The number of hours allocated for each event is three clock hours: one for the talk and two for the performance. The opera, however, will be counted as four hours: one for the talk and three for the opera performance.
