Polyphonic.org

Polyphonic.org – a website designed for professional orchestral musicians – debuted in April of 2006. The site offers a range of educational and informational services to help career musicians realize professional growth, personal fulfillment, career advancement, job satisfaction, participate in their organizations and become effective stakeholders in their symphonies and musical arts organizations. The site includes Orchestra Spotlights on various orchestras in North America, Virtual Discussion Panels with experts on a variety of topics, video Interviews with host Greg Sandow, and over 100 Articles on a variety of topics related to orchestral musicians.

Polyphonic.org Conference - Polyphonic.org will bring together the chairpersons of 22 of the largest orchestras in the country to discuss the Orchestra Musician Forum website, Polyphonic.org--its impact on the orchestra world since its inception two and one half years ago and its future direction.  To the best of our knowledge this is the first time this group of musicians, who are elected by their respective orchestras, will assemble in such a meeting.  The conference is facilitated by Paul Boulian, who has worked extensively in the areas of strategy, leadership and accelerated change processes for both corporate and nonprofit entities.  Paul has worked with symphony orchestra organizations to design and implement facilitated change processes since 1993.  The conference is open to Eastman School of Music faculty and staff only. 9:00am – 4:30pm, Monday September 8th, Ciminelli Lounge.

Polyphonic.org e-Course - Polyphonic.org will launch its first online e-course this year titled "Negotiating an Orchestra Contract." The course will be taught online using Blackboard by David Angus and Robert Levine, and cover topics such as contracts, legal issues, bargaining, cooperative relationships, and mock negotiations. Participants will read and watch video lectures online, participate in virtual discussions online with other participants, and interact with negotiating experts in a new and exciting forum.

Entrepreneurship in Music

Preparing the Generation-E Musician - In January 2009, Eastman School of Music hosts the leaders of nearly 50 higher ed music schools for a workshop on incorporating entrepreneurship into their curriculums. The event builds on a workshop led by Eastman at last year’s National Association of Schools of Music annual conference, where participants were asked to come up with and then implement an entrepreneurial idea at their institutions.

New Venture Challenge - The Eastman New Venture Challenge is a contest to encourage new thinking and innovative ideas in music. It gives students the opportunity to fulfill a business plan that could result in the launch of a new entrepreneurial enterprise. Now in its third year, this contest will take place again during the 2008/09 school year.

Entrepreneurship in Music - Major funding from the Marion Ewing Kauffman Foundation continues to help Eastman students develop skills that will allow them to transform ideas into enterprises that will strengthen the cultural life of this country and hopefully sustain the classical music world of tomorrow. Visit the Entrepreneurship in Music web pages to learn more about what Eastman is doing to foster entrepreneurship. To learn more about what the University of Rochester is doing as a whole in the field of entrepreneurship visit University of Rochester Center for Entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship Workshop - Eastman School of Music, Institute for Music Leadership with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation presented a two day workshop on entrepreneurship at the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) conference, November 16-17, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop considered entrepreneurship from three primary perspectives:  (a) its basic characteristics and processes, (b) the value of entrepreneurial studies for music students, and (c) best practices for incorporating entrepreneurship and leadership studies in the music curriculum. The facilitator was Eric Booth, well known author, entrepreneur and faculty member, The Juilliard School. Presenter included John Paulson, Founder and President MakeMusic, Inc., Catherine Fitterman, Clinical Assistant Professor of Music Business, New York University and Kristin Thelander, Director of the School of Music, University of Iowa. Eastman was represented by Dean Douglas Lowry, Senior Executive Associate Dean, Jamal Rossi and Senior Associate Dean, Ramon Ricker.

In January 2009, the Eastman School of Music will host a follow up conference to continue the discussion started in Salt Lake City. All participants from the original workshop will be invited to attend.
