Sounds of Eastman - Taking Music Further

Technology

ResNet, the University of Rochester's computer network to residence halls, is available in every room of the Student Living Center and provides students with high-speed Internet access. All students are issued an e-mail account; this account is used for official communication between the School and student, and can be easily accessed via web browser and/or telnet. Eastman strongly encourages (but does not require) students to provide their own computers. All students are provided access to the Eastman Student Computing Lab, which is located on the first floor of the Student Living Center. This facility features approximately 30 computers (both Macintosh and Windows operating systems are available), laser printers, and wireless Internet access. This facility is available for student use 24 hours per day during the semester.

Additional computing resources are available in the Internet Café, which is located in the basement of the main building. Serving as a gathering place for students, the facility is equipped with 12 Apple iMacs for e-mail access, Web surfing, and general recreational use. Various Macintosh and Windows computers are available for use in Sibley Music Library.

Eastman's recording studios are equipped with multi-track recorders, mixing consoles, and state-of-the-art digital recording and editing equipment. The studios are used to record student ensemble concerts, faculty recitals, and student degree recitals. Such recordings go back to 1933, and provide an unparalleled resource for study and research. These recordings are available to the public for listening purposes; other recordings made by Eastman have been released by major labels on commercial CD's, cassettes, LP's, and used in broadcasts by National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting Service, and commercial radio and television networks. Students may schedule audition/demo sessions, and order recordings of degree and non-degree recitals; please visit the department's office (ESM 60) for further information regarding scheduling and costs. Students interested in creating demo recordings for competitions, scholarships, and other uses can either record using the self-serve compact disc recorders in Howard Hanson Hall and the Ciminelli Formal Lounge, or purchase a two-hour recording session package from the Technology and Music Production Department. The recording studios also play an important role in the major in jazz studies and contemporary media.
