Monday, August 27, was move-in day for new students at Eastman School of Music. Cars were parked along Gibbs Street in front of Eastman Commons, the Student Living Center, for families to unpack boxes and luggage. Thirty volunteers, current sophomores at Eastman, helped load up carts and bring the new students’ belongings to their rooms. First-day activities for the more than 140 new freshmen, transfers, and international students included a orientation information and social activities such as a welcome picnic and evening ice cream social. Classes at the Eastman School start Tuesday, September 4.

Sophomore Becky Graham, a clarinet and European history major, totes a new freshman's much-needed middle-of-the-night munchies.

Lauren Yu, left, a bassoon performance major, and Aimee Piche, a guitar major, carefully maneuver a cart down Gibbs Street in front of the student living center.

Upperclassmen wait to help Naomi Marcus, an incoming freshman percussion major from Williston Park, Long Island, take her belongings to her room.

Moving-in is a family affair. Incoming freshman Ana Vafai, left, appears to be coordinating the helpful efforts of her father, Jam, center, mother, Elise, and brother, Evan, and the group maneuvers their cart up the entrance ramp to the Eastman student living center. Vafai will be studying viling, piano, and music education.

Geoffrey Penar, a voice major from Shelburn, VT, left, and his father Paul unload a box from their car onto the Gibbs Street sidewalk.

Erin Kelly of California handles her own cello as she moves into Eastman Commons, the Eastman School's student living center, on Monday morning.

Voice major Dana Lundquist carefully walks backwards pulling a cart of student's belongings, assisted by fellow voice major Fotina Naumenko.

Jessica Sindell of Cleveland, Ohio, an incoming flute major, makes sure her items are covered before pushing off toward her new room in the student living center.
