Eastman-Rochester Chorus E-Newsletter, Vol 1, No. 1
The Eastman-Rochester Chorus is a select symphonic chorus presenting masterworks in collaboration with the orchestras of the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Membership is open by audition to Eastman students and to all singers in the greater Rochester area. The chorus performs a wide spectrum of repertoire, ranging from the masterpieces of Bach, Handel, Beethoven, and Brahms to Rochester premieres of works by Leonard Bernstein, Dominick Argento, Samuel Adler, and Christopher Rouse. Distinguished guest conductors have included Robert Shaw, David Zinman, Jerzy Semkow, Christopher Seaman and Gerard Schwarz.
William Weinert has served as musical director since 1994. Recent performances under his direction have included Haydn's The Seasons, Handel's Solomon, Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, and Britten's War Requiem.
The Eastman-Rochester Chorus 2006-07 season will include:
- December 14, 2006: Rochester premiere of the new Robert Levin completion of Mozart's great Mass in C Minor in December. Many musicians have long considered that this Mass, Mozart's final setting of the standard mass text, contains the most sublime music he ever wrote, and Levin's completion restores the mass to its intended proportions.
- May 4, 2007: Ralph Vaughan Williams: Verdi's Quattro pezzi sacri and choruses from Wagner's Lohengrin and Die Meistersinger.
Auditions are held by appointment. For an appointment, e-mail wweinert@esm.rochester.edu or call (585) 274-1444. Rehearsals take place at Reformation Lutheran Church, 111 North Chestnut Street, on Tuesdays from 7:30-9:45.
